STORRS, Conn. - Women's Track and Field Coach Clive Terrelonge has been named Associate Head Coach of the UConn women's track and field team as announced Friday.
Terrelonge is going into his sixth season as a coach of the women's track and field team. He has completed five successful years as the Huskies' sprints/hurdles coach, has led many of his athletes to successful careers at Connecticut. His knowledge and experience as a former international athlete helped the Huskies to take a big step in the BIG EAST Conference.
Coaching several athletes to All-BIG EAST and All-ECAC status, Terrelonge most notably helped to excel the career of current volunteer coach April Garner to record-breaking speeds in the 55-meter and the 100 hurdles, both for which she was a BIG EAST runner-up. Garner also set new school records in the 55 hurdles and 60 during the indoor season and set a personal best in the 200 under Terrelonge's leadership.
Current athletes competing on the national and international scene under Terrelonge's tutelage include Trisha-Ann Hawthorne and Phylicia George. As a freshman in 2008, Hawthorne was a NCAA and World Jr. Championship qualifier in the 100 and 200 dash and was a BIG EAST and ECAC Champion, while breaking the school record in both sprint events. She was also the first athlete in school history to qualifier for the NCAA Championship in both the 100 and 200.
As a sophomore George competed at the Canadian Olympic Trials in the 100 hurdles and 200 dash, while setting new personal bests in both events. Off the track, George was a NCAA Academic All-American. During the 2008 outdoor season, two of Terrelonge's sprinters competed in the NCAA Championship while six competed at the regionals. His sprinters set four school records while his relay teams set new program records in both the 4x100 and 4x200.
Terrelonge's sprint group accounted for about half of the Huskies points that led the Huskies to their first ECAC Outdoor Championship title. During the indoor season, he helped lead the Huskies to a historic season as UConn pulled off the "triple crown" in the championship season, winning the New England, BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles. It was the team's first ever BIG EAST Indoor title, their second consecutive ECAC crown and their
third straight New England Championship victory.
In 2009, Terrelonge led five athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Hawthorne qualified for both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, while being a part of the 4x100 relay that qualified for the National Championship. Mandela Graves-Fulgham qualified for the 400-meter as well. In the 4x100, Hawthorne led the way along with George and former Huskies, Jessica Foreman and Monique Hodges. Terrelonge also led the Huskies' 4x200 relay to the ninth-best finish in the country in 2009.
For the past two seasons, Terrelonge won the Northeastern Assistant Coach of the Year award as presented by the USTFCCCA during the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2008 and 2009.
