STORRS, Conn. - Three different players scored goals in the second half as the No. 7 University of Connecticut field hockey team posted a 3-0 shutout over No. 10 Massachusetts on Friday night at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The win pushes the Huskies record to 12-1 overall, including a 5-1 mark against ranked opponents. It also marked UConn's fifth shutout of the season. UMass slipped to9-4 following the loss.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half, which saw Connecticut out-shoot UMass 13-1 over the opening 35 minutes, Jestine Angelini (Boiling Springs, Pa.) put the Huskies ahead 1-0 with her seventh goal of the season at 37:56, following a penalty corner setup by Allison Angulo (Mount Bethel, Pa.) and Kim Kryzk (Seaville, N.J.).
Sophomore Cara Silverman (Roseland, N.J.) scored on a brilliant tip in when she redirected a shot by Loren Sherer (Essex, England) at 50:20 to increase the margin to 2-0.
Sherer added her BIG EAST-leading 20th goal of the season at 59:35 when she beat UMass goalkeeper Alesha Widdal from a difficult angle on the left side following a feed from Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.).
For the game, Connecticut out-shot Massachusetts 30-2 and attempted 15 penalty corners while not allowing the Minutewomen a single opportunity.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, Oct. 11 when they travel to face Yale in a 2:00 p.m. (ET) start.
