STORRS, Conn. - A gamewinning goal by University of Connecticut sophomore Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec) in the 77th minute gave the Huskies the 2-1 lead and the victory over Georgetown Sunday. The goal was Busque's fourth gamewinner this season.
With the victory, the Huskies improve to 9-3-0 on the season, 4-1-0 in the BIG EAST and earn their ninth victory in the last 10 games. Georgetown falls to 8-3-2 on the season, 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
UConn had a few opportunities early into the first half but it wasn't until the 38th minute that they were able to get on the board. Freshman Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) put the Huskies on the board with some help from junior Elise Fugowski (Stockholm, N.J.) and sophomore Jessica Shufelt (Rochester, N.Y.). The goal was the sixth of the season for the Husky rookie and put the Huskies up by one before the half.
UConn and Georgetown were evenly matched throughout the game. The Hoyas outshot the Huskies 18-16 thanks to seven unanswered shots in the final 11 minutes of play. This is the first time the Huskies have been outshot since September 18 when Providence outshot them 19-11.
After halftime, there was a multitude of chances for the Huskies to lengthen their lead but in the 76th minute, Georgetown tied the game up at one-all when Sara Jordan sent a laser shot that went right through the hands of sophomore Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.).
The Huskies fired back a little more than a minute later in the 77th minute when Busque chipped the ball over the hands of the Georgetown goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin with some help from senior Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.). Taylor stole the ball away from Georgetown and streaked up the field dishing the ball out to Busque who corralled it and got it past DesJardin to retake the lead from Georgetown.
The Hoyas would not go down easily though, putting together some shots that looked like they could take the Husky lead away at the end of the game. Two shots by Georgetown in the final minutes got past Dulski but hit the post, saving the goal for the Huskies.
Dulski finished the game with six saves, allowing just the one goal over the course of the weekend.
UConn is back in action next weekend in the first of two-straight weekend road trips. The Huskies will begin the weekend in Milwaukee, Wisc. where they will take on Marquette before traveling down to South Florida to take on the Bulls on Sunday.
