STORRS, Conn. - Senior assistant captain Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) of the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team was named the Hockey East's Pure Hockey Player of the Week on Monday after scoring four points.
Binning became the first player since Nicole Tritter in 2008 to record four points in a single game after scoring a pair of goals and adding a pair of assists against Brown. She helped the Huskies win an 8-1 game against the Bears on Oct. 23 and was one of two players to score twice in the game. Binning had assists on the first goal of the game as well as the gamewinner in Providence, R.I.
She was one of three players to finish the 2-0 weekend with four points and led the team in shots (17) and plus-minus (+5). This is the first Hockey East weekly award for Binning this season and the second of her career. She is the second member of the UConn team to be honored this season joining freshman Elisabeth Stathopulos (Toronto, Ont.) who was named the Bauer Rookie of the Week on Oct. 12.
The Huskies followed their victory at Brown with a 4-1 win against Union on Saturday at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. UConn is now 4-3-1 on the season and have a 0-1-1-0 Hockey East record going into this weekend. On Saturday at 5 p.m. the Huskies face-off at New Hampshire in a return to conference play before hosting Providence on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
