Longtime Track Supporter Angus Wooten Passes Away

STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 2, 2008) -- Angus Wooten, a fixture on the UConn campus, passed away on Aug. 30. He was a tremendous supporter of the track and field program. The following is his obituary from Potter Funeral Home in Mansfield, Conn.

Angus F. Wootten, 69, of Willimantic, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at his home. He was born November 9, 1939 in England, the son of the late Frederick and Gwendolyn (Holloway) Wootten and had lived in Willimantic since 1960. He received a Bachelors’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Connecticut and was a life long devotee of physical education, especially for children. In his prime Angus was a nationally recognized competitor in cross country races. He had won the Mt. Washington Road Race, twice placed in the top ten in the Pikes Peak Marathon and had run in the Thanksgiving Day Manchester Road Race each of the past 49 years. Angus coached a number of local teams including the UConn Swim and Cross Country teams. He served as an official at the Summer Fun Runs, taught an Introduction to Track program for children and was honored in 2006 by the Connecticut Coaches Association as a friend and contributor to cross country. He is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Frank Wootten of New Hampshire, Neal and Peg Wootten of New Jersey, eight nieces and nephews, Amy, Rachel and Bryce Wootten, T.K., Matthew and Nathan Wootten, Donna Johnson and Terri Yu. He was predeceased by a sister, Yvonne Wootten Squires. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
