STORRS, Conn. (September 17, 2008) – The men’s track team has named their captains for the 2008-09 indoor/outdoor season. The captains will be seniors Andrew Dubs, Steven Iannaccone and Sean Smith.
Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) is a member of the UConn track team’s throwing squad. Dubs was the BIG EAST champion in shot put during both the 2007 and 2008 outdoor seasons. He helped his team win the BIG EAST championship and won another shot put championship for himself during the 2008 indoor season when he placed first in the shot put with a throw of 57-8¼ an indoor personal best. Later in the year he went on to break his outdoor personal best at the 2008 outdoor BIG EAST championships with a throw of 60-3¼ .
“Andrew Dubs is a 3 time BIG EAST champ who has been a leader for some time,” said men’s track head coach Greg Roy. “Dubs is the President of the SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) and his captaincy is a formal affirmation of what he has been for some time, a leader on and off the field.”
A future coach, Dubs is the recipient of the Robert E. Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, named for the longtime UConn Track and Field cross country coach.
Steven Iannaccone (Toms River, N.J.) is a fifth-year senior at UConn who mainly competes in mid-distance events for the Huskies. He has been a consistent competitor for the Huskies who has improved on his times as each year has passed. Iannaccone is a member of the indoor track record-holding 4x800 meter relay team who set the UConn record with a time of 7:34.03 in 2006.
Iannaccone has been a member of the cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams in first four years at the University. He redshirted his indoor season as a freshman and his outdoor season as a senior allowing him to compete during the 2008-09 season.
“Steve Iannaccone has been a model of perseverance both in the classroom and on the track,” said Coach Roy. “An All-BIG EAST performer in the 1000 meters, he leads the way in the classroom as well, working on a double major in urban planning and business which he hopes will help him with a future in Real Estate Development”
Iannaccone is the recipient of the J. Peter Natale Track and Field Scholarship.
Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) is an all-around competitor for the Huskies as he competes in the multi-jump, sprinting and heptathlon events. At the indoor BIG EAST Track and Field Championships last season, Smith placed sixth in the heptathlon helping UConn to win its third track and field championship in the last five years. Smith then went on to win the heptathlon at the New England Indoor Championships.
“A decathlete and former walk-on who earned an athletic scholarship, Sean Smith has scored in every BIG EAST Championship in which he has competed,” said Coach Roy.
‘Smitty’ has also managed to maintain a gaudy 3.6 GPA in the School of Business and is the recipient of the Seymour Gavens Scholarship.
