STORRS, Conn. (June 16, 2008) - The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) has named Connecticut women's track and field senior Tamara Highsmith (East Haven, Conn.) an NCAA Division I All-American as determined by her performance in the triple jump at the outdoor championships this past weekend at Drake University. She completed her competition by finishing as the seventh best American in the competition.
This honor marks the second time in her career that Highsmith has been named an All-American. During the indoor season earlier this year, she finished seventh in the triple jump at the NCAA meet in Arkansas for her initial award. The designation becomes the 22nd All-American title for the program overall, and includes her teammate Carin Knight (New Rochelle, N.Y.), who earned All-American status in the high jump at the indoor NCAA Championship.
"We have always said that our team's success has started with the efforts of Tamara in the pentathlon and concludes with her anchoring the final event, the 4x400-meter relay," said head coach Bill Morgan. "It is somewhat meaningful that our 2007-08 campaign concludes with her being named as an All-American at the National Championship. As a two-time All-American her final year, her legacy has been stamped into program history. Her triple jump of 44-1¼ has qualified her for the Olympic Trials to be held in Eugene, Ore., June 27-July 6. This has been a remarkable year for Tamara. She led the team to the BIG EAST, New England and ECAC Indoor Championships, and helped them capture the outdoor ECAC title as well. She set both indoor and outdoor school records in the triple jump and captured BIG EAST and ECAC titles in that event as well."
