Men's Track and Field to Compete in IC4A Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. (May 15, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team travels to Princeton, N.J. May 16-18 to compete in the 132nd annual IC4A Championship meet. The meet will feature 82 schools from all three NCAA divisions that are members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). The meet gets under way Friday at 1:00 p.m. with the decathlon.
Qualifying standards for the IC4A meet are very stringent, which means only the best athletes from each school compete. UConn will be fielding a strong team, and head coach Greg Roy is hoping for a top five finish in the meet, but admits that the return to health of captain Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) is key to Connecticut's chances.
"What Basil did in running all those races at the BIG EAST Championship was amazing," Roy said. "In all my years coaching I've never had an athlete do that, he really put the team first. Unfortunately, he is paying for it now. Hopefully he'll be ready to go this weekend."
This is also the Huskies' last meet before they compete at the NCAA Regionals in Tallahassee on May 30-31. That means it is the last chance for Connecticut athletes who have yet to qualify for that competition to do so.
"Will Sanders' (Wethersfield, Conn.) last steeplechase run was only .99 of a second off the qualifying standard, so if he can shave one more second off it this weekend, he's in," said Roy. "I also think Museveni Akanno (Linden, N.J.) is ready for a big week as he looks to qualify in both the long jump and triple jump.
