STORRS, Conn. (April 23, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team ran into one of the better pitchers in the nation in Brandice Balschmiter of Massachusetts Wednesday. The Huskies fell to the Minutewomen 6-0 to end their seven game winning streak. UConn is now 25-17 on the season, while UMass is 31-11.
After scoring one run in each of the first two innings, Massachusetts opened the game up with four in the top of the third. The big hit came when Carly Normandin hit a double to left field to score two runs.
Meanwhile, Balschmiter had her best pitches working Wednesday. Coming into the game with a 20-6 record and a 0.60 ERA, she no-hit the Huskies, with only two UConn players reaching base, one by an error on the shortstop, and Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.) was hit by a pitch.
One positive for Connecticut was the performance of pitcher Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.). Coming in relief in the fourth inning, she kept the Minutewomen off the board for the final four innings, giving up only three hits and striking out five.
UConn returns to BIG EAST play this weekend when they hit the road for two important doubleheaders. They face 23rd-ranked DePaul on Saturday, with game one starting at 1:00 p.m. They then will move onto Notre Dame Sunday, with game one starting at 11:00 a.m.
