STORRS, Conn. (April 16, 2008) - The University of Connecticut softball team made it five wins in their last six games with a 7-3 win over Brown Wednesday in non-conference action. The Huskies improve to 20-16 on the year, while the Bears fall to 6-20.
Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) got UConn started in the bottom of the first when she doubled home Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.). It was the first hit of what would turn into a 3-for-3 day for the Connecticut catcher.
After Brown tied the score in the second, the Huskies took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third when Allie Gendron (Belchertown, Mass.) singled home both Del Ponte and Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.). UConn put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The inning was highlighted by a Micah Truax (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) triple to deep centerfield that scored a run.
Other Huskies having good days at the plate included Gendron, who was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Roy, who was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.) picked up the win in relief. She pitched four innings, giving up five hits and two unearned runs, while striking out five.
UConn hits the road for two key BIG EAST doubleheaders over the weekend. The Huskies will travel to Villanova on Saturday, with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m. They then move on to Rutgers Sunday, with the first game there also starting at 12:00 p.m.
