BATON ROUGE, La. (March 27, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team travels to Baton Rouge to participate in the LSU Relays this Friday and Saturday. This is an elite level competition that will feature some of the best UConn athletes competing against some of the top competitors in the country.
"This is our first outdoor meet of the season and its a big one," said head coach Greg Roy, "Unlike the indoor season where you have eight meets to prepare for the BIG EAST Championship, in the outdoor season you only have four full meets. That is why it is important for everyone participating this week to have a good meet, and for those who are staying back to continue to train hard."
Nine athletes have qualified to participate in this year's event. Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.) and Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) are entered in the high jump. Hutcherson and Museveni Akanno (Linden, N.J.) will compete in the triple jump. Akanno will also compete in the long jump. Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) is participating in the shot put and discus events. In their first meet since earning All-America status in the indoor season, Mike Rutt (Sinking Springs, Pa.) and Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) will each compete in the 1500-meter race. Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) and Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) are each entered in both the 100-meter and 110-meter high hurdle races. Finally, the Huskies will field a 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Rutt, Gagnon, Campbell and Troy Rochester (Danbury, Conn.).
Following each day of competition, results and a recap will be posted on www.UConnHuskies.com.
