BOLTON, Mass. (September 14, 2007)-- The University of Connecticut golf team, under the direction of new head coach Dave Pezzino, stands in eighth place after 36 holes of competition at the 2007 Hawks Invitational, hosted by the University of Hartford at The International Golf Club.
The Huskies shot a team total of 313-298--611 on Friday to stand in eighth place in the 13-team field. Old Dominion holds the team lead at 288-290--578.
Keegan Bradley of St. John's holds the individual lead by one shot after totaling a three-under par total of 141 Friday. Senior A.J. Siekierski (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) was the best UConn finisher on the day, shooting an eight-over par total of 152 to stand in a tie for 30th place. Freshman Chris DeLucia (Norwich, Conn.) shot the best Husky round of the day with a 73 in the afternoon round. He shot 80 in the morning and stands in a tie for 32nd place at 153.
"We had a tough start to the 2007 fall campaign, but the team showed some resiliency in the second round," said Pezzino. "This is a great golf course that will come up and bite you when you least expect it. Our goal this semester is to improve everything we do in all facets of our games and the second round showed a lot of class and allowed the team to prove to themselves that they are ready to compete even after a tough start. A.J. played some steady golf today. He made some quality decisions and he knows he left some shots out there. I was also very pleased with Chris' comeback in the afternoon round."
The participating schools in the tournament are as follows: Binghamton, Brown, Columbia, Connecticut, Florida Gulf Coast, Hartford, Old Dominion, Penn State, Sacred Heart, San Francisco, St. John’s, Texas San Antonio and West Florida.
The 54-hole event is being played on the award-winning Oaks Course designed by Tom Fazio. The teams will play a final 18 on Saturday. The action begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start, and live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
