STORRS, Conn. (June 27, 2007) - Jillian Sullivan (Bristol, Conn.), a graduated senior of the University of Connecticut women's track and field team, earned Third Team Academic All-America honors by ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
Sullivan ends her career as one of the most prolific long distance runners in school history. She became the first cross country All-American in program history in the Fall with a 24th place finish at the NCAA Championships. With a time of 21:16, her finish was the best in UConn history at Nationals.
"For four years, Jillian worked hard on the track and in the classroom," distance coach Kim McGreevy said. "She is the quintessential student-athlete who has represented UConn to the highest degree. The coaching staff could not be more proud of her accomplishments and she will be truly missed."
On the track, Sullivan won the BIG EAST title in the 3,000m steeplechase this year and is the current school record holder in the event with a time of 10:13.45. After a ninth place finish at the NCAA East Regional, she went on to compete at the NCAA Championships.
This is the second Academic honor for the Bristol, Conn., native this year as she was named a member of the NCAA Individual All-Academic Team for cross country and aided UConn in being an NCAA All-Academic Team during all four years of her Husky tenure.
Sullivan graduated in May with a degree in nursing and finished with a GPA of 3.64. To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career.
