Women's Tennis Opens Play At The Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. (October 5, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team took six-of-eight singles flights Friday to open the Bucknell Invitational.
BreAnn Cheung (Tuscon, Ariz.) won the first round of #3 singles play, defeating her Boston University opponent Lauren Lucido, 6-4, 6-3, to start the string of victories for the Huskies.
Jessica Porter (Duluth, Ga.) and Ali Campitiello (New York, N.Y.) also picked up wins, taking numbers 4 and 5 singles. Porter won, 6-3, 6-1, over Quinnipiac's Amanda Petruzzi, while Campitiello defeated Carlin Calcaterra of Boston University, 6-2, 6-4.
The Huskies' good fortune continued through the final three flights with wins by Megan Doran (Brigantine, N.J.), Katie Mortitz (York, Pa.) and Alison Koch (Lafayette Hill, Pa.). Doran advanced past Chiore Koike in the #6 spot, 6-2, 6-1, followed by Moritz at #7 with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
Koch wrapped up the day at #8, defeating Boston University's Camille Simonetti, 6-1, 6-0.
Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) fell in her Flight 1 match to NJIT's Iulia Doci, in a long three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, (10-2). In #2 singles, Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) dropped a 4-6, 7-4 (4), (10-8) decision to Quinnipiac's Jackie Herb.
Competition continues Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational.
