Swimming and Diving Splits Meet at Villanova
Divers Liza Marianni and Stephen Ferreira sweep one and three meter dive events
VILLANOVA, Pa. (October 27, 2007) - The University of Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team defeated Villanova University by a score of 196-94 on Saturday afternoon at Villanova. The women defeated Richmond by a score of 149-145, but fell to the Wildcats by a score of 164-136.
The men’s team had a total of 13 first place finishes in the meet this afternoon.
Sophomore diver Stephen Fereirra (Madison, Conn.) swept the men’s dive events. He posted a score of 178.30 in the one-meter dive and a score of 175.40 in the three-meter dive.
Junior Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) also swept the dive events for the women. She had a total of 165.25 points in the one-meter dive and scored 187.50 in the three-meter dive.
Senior Michael Brocki (Westhampton, N.Y.) and freshman Alex Davidson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) nabbed multiple wins in the meet. Brocki was the top swimmer in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. Davidson won the 1000 freestyle and 200 backstroke.
Also taking first place wins for the men was Nick Conrad (Olney, Md.), John Hogan (Walkersville, Md.), Jules Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.), Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland), Stephen Kustra (North Huntington, Pa.) and John Henry Dasinger (Madison, Miss.).
The women were led by juniors Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) and Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.). Shelps won the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.41. DeVinney took the top spot in the 200 butterfly clocking in at 2:05.97.
The Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams return to the pool on Sunday, October 28 when they head to Lehigh. Diving will begin at 10:30 a.m. and swimming at 12:30 p.m.
