Women's Tennis Falls to UMass 4-3

STORRS, Conn. (September 27, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell to UMass in a close match, 4-3, on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Storrs, Conn.
"Today was a great battle against UMass," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "Our ladies played very well and we look to build on this for the rest of the season."
UMass won the doubles point to take an early lead. Senior Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) lost an 8-0 match to Spiess/Pozar while junior Jessica Porter (Duluth, Ga.)and sophomore Breann Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) fell to Lecluyse/de Jong, 8-6, at No.2.
At No.3 doubles, senior Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) and sophomore Alison Koch (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) won an 8-2 match over Stanimirovic/Murillo.
In singles play, Porter defeated Stanimirovic at No.3, 6-2, 6-1 while at No.4, Cheung took down de Jong in an exciting 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 win. Dibbs got her second win of the day at No.5 by winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 over Lecluyse.
At No.1, Burek fell to Spiess 6-1, 6-0 while LoRusso lost 6-2, 6-0 to Pozar at No.2. Senior Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) lost to Gimenez 6-1, 6-2 at No.6.
UConn returns to the courts at the Bucknell Invitational October 6-8.
