Women's Tennis Produce Big Wins at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. (September 24, 2006) – The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team had another successful weekend of tournament play at the Quinnipiac Invitational Sept. 22-24, in Hamden, Conn.
For the Huskies, senior Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) reached the championship match of flight C singles. On her way to that match, the No.2 seeded Dibbs defeated Barbara Couto of UMBC 6-4, 6-1 before winning a 6-7(5), 6-0, 12-10 match over Bucknell’s Renee Weissand. She then got a 6-1, 6-0 win over Danielle Rodriguez of Quinnipiac before falling to No.1 Iva Gyurgina of Seton Hall 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.
In flight B, No.1 seeded freshman Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) defeated Jessica DeCarlos of Fairleigh Dickenson 6-1, 7-5 before winning a 6-2, 6-2 match over Quinnipiac's Kasey Rosenberger. In the semifinal match, LoRusso fell to Tania Varela of Bucknell 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. She then won in the consolations over Erica Federgreen from Bucknell 8-4.
Sophomore Alison Koch (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) played to a 7-5, 6-1 win over Tiff Card of Bucknell before defeating Army's Kate Houghton 2-5, ret. Koch lost in the semifinals to Diana Alquero in a close 7-5, 7-6(6).
Sophomore Breann Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) won her first round match over Joy Adewumi of UMBC 6-4, 6-2 before losting to Amada El-Tobgy 6-1, 6-4 from Seton Hall.
In flight A, junior Jessica Porter (Duluth, Ga.) fell to Julija Korsunova of Fairleigh Dickenson 6-1, 6-4 and then defeated Stony Brook's Federgreen 8-5 in the consolations. Senior Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) also fell in Flight A to Nadja Sein of Seton Hall 6-2, 6-2 before getting an 8-3 win over Army's Jessica Shurtz.
Senior Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) fell to Adrianna Fonseca of UMBC 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 before taking down Stony Brook's Caitlin Crowley 8-1. In Flight D, freshman Jenny Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) fell to Amy Sarrazin of Quinnipiac 6-1, 6-2 and then lost to Alexandera Harvey of Seton Hall 9-8(7).
In doubles play, the pair of Petruzzi/Koch got an 8-2 win over Harvey (Seton Hall) and Houghton (Army) before taking down Sarson/Adams of Quinnipiac, 8-2. The duo then lost to Burduroglu/Sein of Seton Hall, 8-0.
Dibbs/Marrotta took down Merlino (Quinnipiac) and Vousha (Stony Brook) 8-5 before falling to Myers/Vasile of Stony Brook 9-8(5).
In flight A doubles, Burek/LoRusso defeated Shurtz/Limsiaco of Army 8-6 before losing to Seton Hall's Gyurgina/El-Tobgy 8-2. In the consolations, they got an 8-2 win over UMBC's Adewumi/Couto.
Porter/Cheung fell to Cette/Chen from UMBC 8-6 and then lost an 8-6 match to Army's Ford/Alquero.
The Huskies return home on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to face UMass at 2:30 p.m.
