No. 10 UConn Field Hockey Routs UMass 6-0

AMHERST, Mass. (September 23, 2006) - Six different players scored goals as the No. 10 University of Connecticut field hockey team rolled past Massachusetts 6-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The UConn defense also got in on the act as it dominated play in its end and held UMass without a single shot over the first 54 minutes of action.
The shutout marked the second in as many games for Connecticut as goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero (Emmaus, Pa.) made a pair of saves behind the solid effort by the defense.
The win improves UConn to 7-2 overall, while Massachusetts falls to 2-7 on the year.
Sophomore Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) got things rolling for the Huskies with her fourth tally of the season at the 11:26 mark, off a feed from junior Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland), to make the score 1-0.
Aird returned the favor at the 20:02 mark as she set up Peijs for her team-best seventh goal of the season, increasing the Connecticut advantage to 2-0.
The Huskies put the game away in the second half with three goals over a stretch of 5:04. Sophomore Mandy Odenbach (Webster, N.Y.) ripped her third score of the season at 46:49 before fellow sophomore Lindsay Leck (Clarksburg, N.J.) added her fourth goal of the season just 2:49 later to up the advantage to 4-0. Senior Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, Conn.) capped off the flurry with her second goal of the season less than two minutes later to move the margin to 5-0.
Jennifer Kleinhans (Mannheim, Germany) added the game’s final score on a penalty corner setup from Hoffmann and Meghan Wheeler (Canton, Mass.).
UConn returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 when it plays host to Quinnipiac beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
