WEST POINT, N.Y. (September 17, 2006) – Freshman Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) played her way through flight three of singles and defeated Sara Mansur of Brown, 7-5, 2-6, 13-11 to claim the flight championship on Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Army Invite.
En route to the championship, the third-seeded LoRusso defeated Annie Davies of Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4. LoRusso then took down West Virginia’s Gabrielle Blaskovicova, seeded No.2, 7-5, 7-5.
UConn had not placed a singles player in the championship match at the Army Invite since Kelley’s older sister Jen did so during her tenure as a Husky from 2001-2005.
“Kelley had an outstanding tournament and we’re very pleased with her performance,” head coach Glenn Marshall said. “She has a great future ahead of her at UConn.”
Other Huskies in action included sophomore BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) who won a 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 match over Army's No. 4 Paige Ford. Cheung then lost to No.2 Tanja Vucetic of Brown, 7-6(2), 5-7, 10-2 in the semifinals.
