Men's Track Wraps Up First Day At NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 7, 2006) - Junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) stands in 22nd place after the first day of the decathlon competition with 3391 points and senior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) failed to advance past the first round of the 800m on the first day of competition at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Berg, in his first NCAA Championships appearance, ran the 100m portion of the decathlon in a time of 11.42 seconds and followed that with a 6.36m showing in the long jump. He threw the shot put 11.37m and had a height of 1.83m in the high jump portion of the competition. In his final event of the day, Berg ran a personal-best time of 51.77 seconds in the 400m run.
Legare, a former outdoor All-American in the 800m, failed to advance past Wednesday's preliminary round after finishing in sixth place in his heat and 24th overall with a time of 1:50.22.
The decathlon competition will conclude on Thursday, June 8 with events beginning at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.
