AMHERST, Mass. (May 7, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team closed out the 2006 season with an 11-3 loss at the University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies finished with a 19-29 season record while UMass is now 34-14 overall.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard first when sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) homered to right centerfield with two outs in the top of the first inning. However, the Minutewomen scored two in the bottom of the first, second and third to take a 6-1 advantage.
Junior Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.) opened the top of the fourth with a single and was advanced to second on a single by senior Erica Pernell (Plainville, Conn.) before a single by junior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) loaded the bases. With one out, freshman Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) sent a single to center field and drove in Keeton. With the bases still loaded, freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) walked, causing Pernell to score and cutting the UMass lead to three runs.
That small advantage was short-lived, however, as UMass scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning and got two more in the bottom of the fifth to close out the win.
Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) took the loss in the circle for the Huskies. Going two innings, she gave up five hits and four earned runs while striking out one. Freshman Rachel Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) pitched two innings of relief, giving up five hits and three earned runs while also striking out one batter. Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) was the final UConn pitcher of the game, facing one batter in the bottom of the fifth.
