Berg Captures Decathlon At IC4A Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. (May 13, 2006) - Junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) won the decathlon competition at the IC4A Championships on Saturday. The three day meet, held at Princeton University, is UConn's final qualifying meet prior to the NCAA Regionals.
Berg won the decathlon with a total of 6888 points. He had a time of 11.39 in the 100m dash, a jump of 6.64m in the long jump, a throw of 12.53, in the shot put and a height of 1.85m in the high jump in the competition. The junior also ran the 400m in a time of 52.98, the 110m hurdles in 15.33 and threw a discus 36.04m. To conclude the competition, Berg had a height of 4.75m in the pole vault, threw a javelin 52.22m and ran the 1500m in a time of 5:03.36,
Freshman Erik Thunberg (Groton, Conn.) was seventh in the decathlon with 6072 points while fellow classmate Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was 10th with 5777.
Also wrapping up competition on Saturday at the meet was junior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.), who took 17th in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.06m. Sophomore David Roy (Woonsocket, R.I.) was 25th in the hammer with a throw of 50.65m. In the long jump, freshman Matt Tift finished in 11th place with a distance of 7.07m.
Three Huskies qualified for the finals of their events, to be held on Sunday, as did UConn's 4x100m and 4x800m relay teams. Junior Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) will compete in the finals of the 110m hurdles after a preliminary time of 14.44 seconds while junior Edwin Campbell (Silver Spring, Md.) will compete in the final of the 400m dash after a qualifying time of 47.77. Senior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.), who, like Basil Campbell, is the reigning BIG EAST Champion in the event, qualified first in the 800m with a time of 1:49.64.
The 2006 IC4A Championships will conclude on Sunday, May 14 with events beginning at 10:30 a.m. The final event of the day, the 4x400m relay, is set to go off at 3:30 p.m.
