Men's Track Captures Title At UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. (April 8, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men's track team captured eight individual titles on their way to the team crown on a soggy day at the UConn Invitational held at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The Huskies finished with 170 points while the Brown University took second with 129 points and the University of Rhode Island was third with 128 points. Sacred Heart University was fourth with 70 points.
The Huskies saw great success in the field events on the day, with freshman Jim Roy (Simsbury, Conn.) taking home the title in the javelin throw in 58.79m, junior Jake Radzevich (Hampstead, N.H.) capturing the pole vault with a height of 4.90m and freshman Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.) taking the long jump title in 7.33m.
UConn also had a second-place finish in the triple jump, with sophomore Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) finishing in 14.06m, as well as the high jump, shot put and hammer throw. In the hammer throw, senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) finished with a throw of 52.83m while sophomore Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) was second in the shot put with a throw of 16.22m. Freshman Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.) was second in the high jump in 2.01m. Dubs also took third in the discus in 48.16m
In the two relays contested on Saturday, the UConn "A" team was third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:20.69 and took second in the 4x100m relay in 41.76 seconds.
Senior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) captured the 800m run title with a time of 1:51.16. In the 400m dash, junior Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) ran a personal-best time of 48.00 seconds to capture the title. He was followed in the race by freshman Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.), who took third in a time of 49.00. Campbell also captured the 110m hurdles title with a time of 14.56 seconds.
In the 1500m run, sophomore Steve Iannaccone (Toms River, N.J.) won the event in 3:51.30. Legare was fourth in a time of 4:02.56. In the 100m dash, junior Kelechi Ndu (Ashford, Conn.) was fourth in a time of 10.78 seconds.
Earlier in the week, junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) captured first place with a personal-best 6773 points in the decathlon. Freshman Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished in second place with 6040 points, and fellow freshman Erik Thunberg (Groton, Conn.) was third with 5845 points. Freshman Joe Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) placed fifth in the competition with 5328 points.
The Huskies will be in action next on Saturday, April 15 at both the Brown Invitational and the Sea Ray Relays.
