Berg Holds Lead After First Day of Decathlon Competition

STORRS, Conn. (April 6, 2006) - University of Connecticut junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) stands in first place with 3488 points after the first day of the decathlon at the UConn Invitational. The 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m dash portions of the event were held on Thursday.
Berg turned in the quickest time of all the decathlon competitors in the 100m dash, running the event in a time of 11.36 seconds. He also came home with the best distance in the long jump, 6.73m, and the shot put, 13.01m. The junior was fourth in the high jump in 1.75m and second in the 400m dash with a time of 52.49 seconds.
Joining Berg in the decathlon competition is freshman Erik Thunberg (Groton, Conn.), who currently stands in second with 3265 points, freshman Sean Smith (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who is third with 3165 points and freshman Joe Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) who, with 3100 points, is in fourth place. Unattached competitor Kurt Gustafson is fifth with 2881 points.
Thunberg was second in the 100m dash with a time of 11.58 second and captured the 400m dash in 52.20 seconds. Smith captured the high jump portion of the competition in 1.87m and was closely followed by Staub in 1.84m. Staub also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 12.29m.
The remaining events of the decathlon will take place on Friday, April 7 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The rest of the UConn Invitational will take place on Saturday, April 8 at the Sherman Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m.
