HAMDEN, Conn. (April 5, 2006) - Freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) and fellow freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) each drove in one run as the University of Connecticut softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 15-15 on the season and close out the season series with the Bobcats with a 2-0 mark. Quinnipiac is 7-27 on the season.
UConn got on the scoreboard first in the top half of the third inning. Truax opened the inning with a single through the left side and stole second while junior Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.) was at bat. Two batters later, Del Ponte singled through the right side and Truax came around to score and give the Huskies the lead.
The Connecticut lead increased by one in the top of the fourth on a single by Truax. Freshman Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) reached base on a fielder's choice as the second batter up and then advanced to second when classmate Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) reached on an error. Truax knocked Neuschwander in as the next batter in the lineup but was stranded at second to close out the inning.
Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) picked up the win, her seventh of the season, on the mound for UConn. She gave up just two hits in three innings of work and struck out four. Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) saw action in two innings for the Huskies, giving up one hit and striking out one batter while freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) picked up her second save of the year after striking out two batters and allowing no hits in the final two innings of the game.
The Huskies will be in action next on Saturday, April 8 when they host BIG EAST newcomer South Florida for a doubleheader at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. and the second game will follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
