NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (April 25, 2006) - Despite two doubles and two runs batted in from sophomore Allie Gendron (Amherst, Mass.) the University of Connecticut softball team fell to Central Connecticut State University, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies are now 18-23 on the season while the Blue Devils are now 6-29 overall.
All of the scoring in the game came in the third inning, with UConn striking first. Freshman Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) got the Husky offense started with a single and moved to second on a walk but fellow freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.). After a fielders choice play saw Tierney out at third by freshman Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) on first base, Gendron picked up her first double of the game to drive in both Truax and Ortega. Gendron scored herself when freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled to centerfield as the next batter up in the lineup.
However, the UConn lead did not last long, as the Blue Devils scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and the eventual victory. The Central Connecticut runs came on walks, a double and a single off of two UConn pitchers in the half-inning.
Freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) took the loss in the circle for UConn. In 2.2 innings, she scattered two hits and stuck out two batters while giving up five runs. Senior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) struck out three batters in 2.1 innings of relief. Junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) also pitched one inning of relief for UConn.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday, April 26 when they host St. John's at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
