Men's Track Captures Second UConn Invitational Title

STORRS, Conn. (April 22, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team captured the second UConn Invitational of the season on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The Huskies scored 224 points at the meet, defeating Brown University, who finished second with 211 points. In the rubber match of a three-weekend series between the two schools, UConn finished with two victories to Brown's one.
The University of Massachusetts was third with 84 points and Boston University took fourth with 39 points. Providence College was the final competitor, wrapping up fifth place with 35 points.
The Huskies captured 10 events at the meet. Junior Kelechi Ndu (Ashford, Conn.) took home the title in the 100m dash in a time of 11.09 seconds and was followed by freshman Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.) who finished third in 11.47 seconds. Matt Tift finished fourth in a time of 11.64.
In the 800m dash, senior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) captured the event with a time of 1:51.19. Sophomore Steven Iannaccone (Toms River, N.J.) was third in 1:54.54 and junior Max Feldman (Easton, Conn.) took fourth in 1:56.30 while junior Kyle Eckman (Bridgewater, N.J.) was sixth in a time of 1:58.80.
Sophomore Will Melofchik (Wayside, N.J.) won the 5000m run in a time of 14:59.25 and the Huskies captured the title in both relay events, winning the 4x100m in a time of 42.24 seconds and the 4x400m in 3:17.37.
UConn also continued to see success in the field events at the meet, with freshman Musevani Akanno (Linden, N.J.) taking home the tile in the triple jump with a distance of 14.79m. He was followed by senior Mark Godoy (Amityville, N.Y.) in third in 14.03m and sophomore Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) in fourth with a distance of 12.94m. Freshman Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.) won the high jump with a jump of 2.06m and classmate Joseph Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) was fourth in 1.91m.
Sophomore Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) captured two titles at the meet, winning the shot put with a throw of 15.48m and the discus in 45.34m. Junior Jake Radzevich (Hampstead, N.H.) won the pole vault with a height of 5.05m and junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) was second in 4.58m.
The Huskies also turned in impressive performances in the 110m hurdles, with Berg taking second in 15.11 seconds and freshman Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) finishing third in 15.60 seconds. Freshman Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) was third in the 400m dash with a time of 48.97 and was followed across the line by junior Edwin Campbell (Silver Spring, Md.) in fourth in 49.39 seconds.
Jackson also took second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.61 seconds while Feldman was second in the 1500m run with a time of 3:50.39. Akanno turned in a third-place performance in the long jump with a leap of 6.88m and was followed by Tift in fourth in 6.78m. Senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) was second in the hammer throw competition with a distance of 52.92m and sophomore David Roy (Woonsocket, R.I.) took third with a throw of 52.26m. The Huskies also earned points in the javelin, with freshman Rob Lasko (North Branford, Conn.) taking third in 56.92m, sophomore Andrew Firger (Haverhill, Mass.) fifth in 54.11m and freshman Jim Roy (Simsbury, Conn.) was sixth with a throw of 53.78m.
The Huskies will be in action next on April 28 and 29 when they travel to both the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. and the Wildcat Invitational in Durham, N.H.
