STORRS, Conn. (April 20, 2006) - After competing at two different meets last weekend, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team is all together and ready to take on the field when they host the second UConn Invitational of the season on Saturday, April 22.
Despite being split between the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I. last weekend, the Huskies saw great success. Eight members of the squad qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in eight different events over the weekend, and two of those athletes qualified in more than one event while one member of the team also qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
Freshman Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) qualified in both the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles while senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) will represent UConn in the discus throw and the hammer throw at the Championships. Freshman James Roy (Simsbury, Conn.) turned in a throw of 64.66m in the javelin at the Brown Invitational, good enough to qualify for both the BIG EAST and NCAA Regional Championships.
The Huskies will face off against Boston University, the University of Massachusetts, Brown University and Providence College at the meet on Saturday. It will be the rubber match of a three weekend series with Brown and the two teams are tied at one win apiece entering the meet.
Said UConn Head Coach Greg Roy, "Saturday promises to be a competitive and entertaining meet. Brown, under a new head coach, is quickly emerging as a New England power in track and field, but many of our student-athletes are back from Tennessee and those that were held out last weekend will return to action and we will be fielding a full championship lineup for the meet."
The second UConn Invitational of the season will be held at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Connecticut beginning at 10:00 a.m. Field events such as the javelin, hammer throw and long jump will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the running events are scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m.
Following the conclusion of all events, a recap and a listing of complete results can be found on UConnHuskies.com.
