STORRS, Conn. (April 11, 2006) - Despite doubles from freshmen Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.), the University of Connecticut softball team fell to Hofstra, 9-0, in six innings at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. The Huskies are now 15-18 overall while the Pride improve to 23-9 on the season.
Freshman Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) took the loss for the Huskies. In four innings of work, Crossin scattered seven hits while striking out five batters. All five of her strikeouts came in the first three innings of the game. Crossin is now 2-4 on the year while Melissa Hodge improves to 5-2 on the year for Hofstra. In four innings, Hodge gave up just two hits and struck out two batters. Sophomore Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) pitched the remaining two innings for UConn, giving up seven hits and striking out one.
The Huskies had an opportunity to score in the home half of the second inning when Del Ponte opened with a double. However, a flyout, strikeout and pop up left her stranded on base. She was one of six Huskies left on base in the game.
UConn's greatest chance to score came in the top of the fifth inning. Down 7-0 and facing a new pitcher, the Huskies loaded the bases on a walk to senior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) and singles by freshmen Meghan Tierney (Salem, Conn.) and Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), but could not capitalize and left all three on base.
Hofstra cemented their win with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on a double and two singles. The Pride had 14 hits in the game while the Huskies picked up just five.
UConn will be in action next on Wednesday, April 12 when they host UMass at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
