Men's Track Takes Second At South Florida Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. (April 1, 2006) - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team opened the scored portion of the outdoor season with a second place finish at the South Florida Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies finished with 168 points, ten shy of champion Mississippi. Host South Florida was third with 142 points and Florida A&M finished fourth with 118.
Several individuals shined for the Huskies in the victory. In the 800m, freshman Brian Gagnon (Lowell, Mass.) was second in a time of 1:54.31 and sophomore Steven Iannaccone (Toms River, N.J.) was fourth in 1:55.42. Iannaccone was also second in the 1500m in a time of 4:04.59 and senior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) took third in 4:06.85.
In the two hurdling events, the Huskies captured four top-five finishes. In the 110m hurdles, junior Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) won the event in a time of 14.31 seconds while junior Sean Berg (Mystic, Conn.) took third in 15.23. Freshman Verrol Jackson (Schenectady, N.Y.) was third in the 400m hurdles in 56.27 seconds with fellow freshman Michael DuPaul (East Haven, Conn.) following him across the line in a time of 56.78 seconds. Junior Kyle Eckman (Bridgewater, N.J.) also placed third in the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 10:41.91.
UConn saw great success in the field events, capturing three titles. In the high jump, freshman Marquis Thomas (Mattapan, Mass.) was second in 2.10m and was followed by sophomore Daniel Hutcherson (New London, Conn.) and freshman Joseph Staub (Stoneham, Mass.) in third and tied for fourth, respectively, with distances of 1.98m and 1.93m.
Junior Jake Radzevich (Hampstead, N.H.) captured the pole vault title with a height of 5.18m and Berg and junior Jonas TePaske (Freehold, N.J.) tied for fourth in 4.73m. Sophomore Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) was second in the shot put with a throw of 16.11m and also placed third in the discus throw in 46.61m. Senior Aaron Isaacs (Danbury, Conn.) won the hammer throw in 53.10m and freshman Rob Lasko (North Branford, Conn.) captured the javelin throw title in 60.97m. Sophomore Thomas Landry (Athol, Mass.) was second in the javelin with a throw of 58.88m.
The Huskies will return to action on Saturday, April 8 when they play host to Northeastern, Central Connecticut, Brown and Quinnipiac in Storrs. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
