Softball Tops Quinnipiac, 6-2

STORRS, Conn. (March 28, 2006) - The University of Connecticut softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 6-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Connecticut Softball Stadium. The Huskies are now 13-11 overall while Quinnipiac slips to 5-22 on the season.
The Huskies got on the score board first in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.) singled to right field to drive in freshman Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.), who had singled to open the inning. The score remained with the UConn advantage until the top of the fourth inning when the Bobcats took the lead on a two-run homer.
The score remained at 2-1 Quinnipiac until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Huskies asserted themselves offensively. A single by junior Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.J.) scored UConn's first run of the inning after freshman Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached on an error to open the half-inning. Calcagno scored on a single by freshman Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) one batter later and sophomore Jessica Balas (Yorktown, N.Y.) scored after freshman Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) walked. Junior Kristina Tolles (Southington, Conn.) and Truax each also scored in the inning.
On the mound, junior Krista Michalczyk (Salem, N.H.) picked up her fifth win of the season after scattering four hits over seven innings of work. She also struck out 10 batters in the win.
The Huskies will be in action next on Wednesday, March 29 when they travel to Holy Cross. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
