Swimming and Diving Finish Terrapin Cup in Top Five
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (November 18, 2006) – Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving program completed their weekend at the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Cup in the top five. The women finished the tournament in fifth place, while the men took third.
The men’s team had a score of 641 points to complete their weekend, the women scored 287 points in the three day tournament.
On the final day of the meet the men were led by solid performances by Frisk Driscoll (Westport, Conn.), Abed Kaaki (Ras Tarura, Saudi Arabia) and Nick Acquavito (Freeport, N.Y.). All of whom reached the finals of their events.
The women’s top finalists were Kristalynn Kempton (Glen Head, N.Y.), Courtney Haney (Mesa, Ariz.) and Katie DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.).
On Friday diver Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) captured the one-meter diving crown with a score of 261.75. Allison Coleman (New Caanan, Conn.) also placed fourth in that event.
Adrian Astiz (Bethesda, Md.) broke UConn's 200 butterfly record on Saturday night with a time of 1:48.23, the previous record was 1:50.78.
Two women's swimmers also made NCAA 'B' cuts over the weekend.
Lisa Shelps (Quakertown, Pa.) qualified in the 200 IM on Thursday night with a time of 2:03.95. Shelps also qualified in the 400 IM on Friday with her time of 4:22.94.
DeVinney qualified in the 200 butterfly event on Saturday clocking in at a time of 2:02.06.
Connecticut returns to action when swimming will participate in the U.S. Open at Purdue University on December 1-2. Diving will participate in the Gail Braith Invitational at Rutgers University on December 1-3.
