STORRS, Conn. (October 28, 2006) - University of Connecticut women’s hockey sophomore goaltender Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Association’s Defensive Player of the Week. She is the first Husky of this young season to earn this honor and over the past three weeks, UConn has completed a hat trick, winning each of the league’s three major weekly awards. Last week, forward Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) was named the Hockey East Player of the Week while, on Oct. 16, defenseman Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) was named the league’s Rookie of the Week.
In a pair of home wins against Wayne State, Wilson stopped 62 of the 67 shots she faced as the Huskies improved to 7-1 on the season, continuing by far the fastest start in school history. Prior to this year, UConn had never won more than four of its first eight games and last year stood at just 3-5 at this juncture. UConn’s 4-0 start in Hockey East play is also a school-record and places the team in first place in the conference standings.
On the year, Wilson is fourth in Hockey East with a 1.63 goals against average, is tied for the league lead with seven wins and ranks third with her .940 save percentage. Wilson also won the award on Jan. 30 last season.
Wilson and the Huskies will return to action on Friday, Nov. 3, when UConn travels to Ohio State in its first full weekend of road contests. The Huskies will remain in Columbus to face the Buckeyes again on Saturday, Nov. 4.
