STORRS, Conn. (October 23, 2006) - University of Connecticut women’s hockey junior forward Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) has been named the Hockey East Association’s Player of the Week. She is the first Husky of this young season to earn this honor. Last week, defenseman Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.) was named the league’s Rookie of the Week.
Hawkins tied an NCAA record, and set a Hockey East benchmark, by netting three power play goals in UConn’s 8-3 win over Maine on Oct. 21. The feat had previously been done three times nationally and last by Jenny Potter of Minnesota-Duluth against St. Cloud State on Dec. 8, 2003. The hat trick, Hawkins’ second in five games this year, was part of a five-point day as she also assisted on two more UConn goals in the win. For the season, Hawkins leads Hockey East in both goals (eight) and points (13).
Hawkins helped the Huskies to a pair of league wins last weekend as, in addition to toppling the Black Bears, UConn shutout Providence, 1-0, on Oct. 22 at the Friars’ Schneider Arena. It was PC’s first ever shutout in Hockey East play and the Friars’ first overall shutout since losing to Harvard, 3-0, on Nov. 11, 2003, a span of 110 games. The two wins keep UConn perfect at 4-0 in league action and 5-1 overall on the year. Both are the fastest starts in school history.
Hawkins and the Huskies will return to action on Friday, Oct. 27, when UConn plays host to Wayne State (1-3-0) at 7:00 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies and Warriors will play again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Storrs.
