Women's Tennis Shutout By UMass In Fall Dual Debut

AMHERST, Mass. (Sept. 28, 2005) – The University of Connecticut women’s tennis team was swept in a 7-0 loss to Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon at the Upper Boyden Tennis Courts in Amherst. The Huskies fall to 0-1 on the season in the fall dual-match debut for both schools.
UMass took all three doubles contests to open the match. While UMass cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 1, the lower two matches were tightly contested. At No. 3, Jana Bartolini and Carly Ludmer topped Ashley Petruzzi and Jess Porter, 8-6, while Minutewomen Susan Johnson and Dorothy Iwanowicz needed to take a 10-8 tiebreaker at No. 2 to top Jaclyn Shapiro and Liz Dibbs.
Singles play saw the Minutewomen take all six matches as well. Freshman Alison Koch continued her good early career run as she was the lone Husky to force a third set, before falling to Johnson, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 6. In an exhibition match at No. 7, UConn got its lone victory of the day as Ashley Petruzzi posted a 7-5, 6-1, win over Kristen DiPiero.
The Huskies will take a week off and return to action Oct. 7-9 when they make their home debut at the UConn Invitational.
