STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team handed BIG EAST newcomer, Marquette, it's first loss of the season, 2-1, at Morrone Stadium on Friday night. Freshman Elizabeth Eng (Chicago, Ill.) scored both goals for the Huskies, improving her career stats to four goals and three assists for a total of 11 points.
The game began slowly as neither team took a shot in the first 10 minutes. Marquette took its first shot at the 10:38 mark of the first half and UConn followed less than a minute later with their first shot, resulting in their first goal. Senior Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, Vt.) crossed the ball to Eng, who accepted the pass in front of Marquette's goal and kicked it past goalkeeper, Laura Boyer.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the first half, Marquette scored its lone goal of the evening. Katie Kelly served a corner kick to Alison Loughrin, and slid the ball past UConn goalie Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.). Heading into half time, the score was tied, 1-1.
Midway through the second half, Eng scored her second goal of the night off a pass from classmate Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.). Taylor drove the ball down the left side of the box and found Eng with a short pass in front of the goal.
It was a tough battle on the field for both teams. Marquette recorded 14 fouls and UConn had nine. The Golden Eagles out-shot the Huskies, 16-13. Jessee and freshman Stephanie Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) split time between the pipes, each recording four saves.
The Huskies will be back in action again on Sunday, Sept. 25 at South Florida.
