SOUTH BEND, Ind. - With the score still tied 1-1 and only 1:08 remaining in the second overtime, freshman Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) received the pass from senior Jennifer Sullivan (Stonington, Conn.) and found the back of the net to defeat Maryland, 2-1, in the first round of the Inn at St. Mary's Tournament.
The Huskies got on the board in the first half off a goal by freshman Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, M.D.). Senior Kristi Lefebvre (Colchester, Vt.) drew Maryland goalie Nikki Resnick out of the goal before touching the ball over to Tegeler, who drove it into the net. The Terrapins responded less then three minutes later when Simone Dekker took a shot on goal against UConn freshman goalkeeper Stephaine Labbe (Stony Plain, Alberta) that was deflected to Natalie Arias on the right wing. Arias kicked the ball from two yards out into the open net.
The rest of regulation was scoreless for both teams. Going into the first overtime, Maryland had taken only four shots on goal as compared to eight by the Huskies. Both teams were aggressive on the field. Maryland recorded 21 fouls and UConn had 15. Junior Niki Cross (Pembroke, Mass.) received a yellow card during the second half and the Terrapins' Mallory Mahar was called for a yellow card during the second overtime.
In overtime, the Huskies took four shots on goal in an attempt to defeat No. 24, Maryland. The Terrapins managed only one shot against the Huskies' defense. With just 1:08 remaining in the second overtime, Taylor took the pass from Sullivan, drove through Maryland's defense on the left wing and kicked the ball past Resnick to score the winning goal for the Huskies and tally her first collegiate goal.
The Huskies are in action again on Sunday, Sept. 4 against Florida for the final round of the Inn at St. Mary's Tournament. The game is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Alumni Field on the University of Notre Dame campus.
