FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Sept. 12, 2005) – Liz Dibbs and Jackie Shapiro teamed to win the Doubles B title to highlight the University of Connecticut tennis teams’ participation in the season-opening Fairfield Doubles Festival this weekend.
Dibbs and Shapiro cruised through their pool, dropping a total of just seven games in three matches. After topping Rhode Island, 8-2, in the semifinals, the Husky pair dropped Stony Brook’s Anne Cathrine Valle and Erica Federgreen, 8-5, to take home their title.
UConn’s other two women’s teams also swept their pool play matches, but were not as successful in the playoffs. Christine Burek and BreAnn Cheung fell, 9-7, to Providence’s Sara Bitetti and Jen Daigle in the A flight semifinals. Jessica Porter, Ashley Petruzzi and Alison Koch took turns for UConn in the C flight but went down, 9-7, to Albany’s Christina Suarez and Kim Weltman in the semifinals.
On the men’s side, UConn reached the finals in both the B and C levels. UConn’s B team of Christian Malerba and Joey Michaels were defeated by Stefano Salvatore and Goldy Sherrill of Quinnipiac in the finals, 8-6. Meanwhile, the trio of Matt Stinson, Mike Bobitski and Joel Gamoran rotated matches like their UConn women counterparts and advanced to the final, falling to Jimmy Delevante and Chris Efstathiou of Queens College, 8-5. UConn’s A team of Sho Sato and Jeff Klar did not have the same success, going 1-2 in pool play and falling, 8-2, in the fifth place match to URI’s Rob Sutphen and Kevin Redmond.
