Softball Falls to Rhode Island, 1-0
STORRS, Conn. (April 29) – The University of Connecticut softball team suffered a 1-0 setback to the University of Rhode Island on Friday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 18-25 overall while the Rams move to 8-33 on the season.
The teams played five scoreless innings before Rhode Island managed to end senior Jessica Gurney’s (Williamstown, Mass.) streak at 34-straight shutout innings. Shelly Petersen singled to left center to open the inning, and then advanced to second on a groundout. Courtney Wall followed with a line single that glanced off Gurney’s knee and then Shelby Dorothy drove in Petersen with an RBI single to right.
UConn’s only two hits, both singles, came in the second and seventh innings by seniors Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.) and Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) as Rams’ pitcher Jill Anderson tossed a complete game two-hit shutout with one walk and one strikeout to record the win (5-10). Gurney took the loss (13-16), pitching seven innings and allowing one run on six hits with four walks and eight strikeouts.
Connecticut returns to action on Saturday, April 30, when the team will travel to Jamaica, N.Y., to take on BIG EAST foe St. John’s in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
