Huskies Sweep Quinnipiac in Home Doubleheader

STORRS, Conn. (April 14) – The University of Connecticut softball team swept Quinnipiac University at the UConn Softball Field on Thursday, securing a 2-0 shutout in game one and winning game two, 10-2 in five innings. The wins move UConn’s record to 13-19 overall while the Bobcats fall to 7-19 on the year.
In game one, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore Holly Calcagno (Cedar Grove, N.H) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a two-out single by senior Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.). Connecticut later added an insurance run in the fourth with a leadoff homerun by freshman Christine Keeton (Spokane, Wash.).
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) held the Bobcats to just two hits as she tossed a complete-game shutout to earn the victory (8-10) with two walks and eight strikeouts. Jessica Skaare took the loss (3-6) for Quinnipiac, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game of the doubleheader, UConn plated four runs in the first. After two quick outs, Calcagno reached with a walk and advanced to third on a single by freshman Allie Gendron (Noblesville, Ind.), then de Bary ripped an RBI double to score both runners.
Senior Stephanie DiBiase (Hamilton, N.J.) followed with an RBI single, advanced to third on an error by the centerfielder and scored on a wild pitch.
The Huskies posted their fifth run of the contest in the third inning as Calcagno reached on an error then scored on an RBI single by Keeton.
The Bobcats threatened, cutting the deficit to three with runs in the fourth and fifth, but Connecticut posted a five-spot in the fifth to end the game. UConn began the inning with back-to-back singles by Calcagno and Gendron then junior Kim Castner (Forked River, N.J.) reached on a fielder’s choice. DiBiase followed with a three-run homer to left field, going 2-for-2 at the plate in game two with two runs scored and four RBI. The Huskies then closed out the game with RBI singles by junior Erica Pernell (Plainville, Conn.) and sophomore Jessica Quan (Stockton, Calif.).
Gurney started game two for Connecticut and pitched one inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout. Freshman Ashley Thody (Middletown, Conn.) relieved her and picked up the win (1-0), allowing two runs on three hits in four innings of work. Kristin Sheriff started and took the loss for Quinnipiac, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing nine runs, seven earned, on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Kim Norman relieved her and faced four batters in the fifth, allowing one run on two hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, April 16, when the team will play host to BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
