Huskies Cruise Past Providence, 7-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 12, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team defeated Providence by a score of 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Providence, R.I. The Huskies won all six singles matches in two sets after sweeping through doubles play. UConn has now won three of its last four meetings and is 5-11 overall with a 3-6 mark vs. BIG EAST opponents.
Senior tri-captains Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.), Whitney Simcik (Reading, Pa.) and Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) registered wins at No. 1, 2, and 3, respectively. LoRusso defeated Sara Bitetti, 6-3, 6-3, while Simcik topped Molly Gilbride, 6-1, 6-1. Schumsky breezed past Lindsey Christensen 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 4, sophomore Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) won 6-0, 6-0 over Carly Hoffend. Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) took care of Katherine Lyons, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 while Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) at No. 6 defeated Karla Ruggeri, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles action, Schumsky and Simcik paired up to top Bitetti and Gilbride, 8-3 at No. 1. LoRusso and Dibbs at No. 2 cruised past Hoffend and Ruggeri, 8-1. Petruzzi and Burek the completed the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-3 win over Christensen and Rodger.
