West Virginia Edges Women's Tennis, 4-3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (March 25, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team was edged, 4-3, by the West Virginia in their second BIG EAST matchup on Friday in Syracuse, N.Y. The Huskies and Mountaineers split the singles matches each winning three, but WVU took the deciding point in doubles play. UConn is now 2-7 this spring and 0-2 against conference opponents.
Senior Whitney Simcik (Reading, Pa.) picked up a two-set win at No. 1, defeating Natalia Prinz, 6-4, 6-4. Fellow senior Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) then rallied at No. 2 to get the 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Kelly Walsh. Sophomore Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) continued her strong play of late, defeating Catherine Koontz, 7-6, 6-3 in a tough No. 4 match.
In doubles action, the Huskies won the No. 1 match when Simcik combined with classmate Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) to defeat Prinz and Walsh by a score of 8-1. No. 2 pair Burek and LoRusso were then edged, 8-6, by WVU's Theis and Percival. The Mountaineers then secured the win when their No. 3 duo of Ashley Constantine and Colleen Speaker topped UConn's Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) and Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.), 8-1.
The Huskies will next play at Rutgers on Tuesday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m.
