Huskies Drop 13-3 Decision Against Fordham
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 20) -- The University of Connecticut softball team suffered a 13-3 setback to Fordham University at the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic on Sunday. UConn falls to 6-11 overall with the loss, while the Rams improve to 8-8 on the year.
Fordham took a 1-0 lead after the first inning as Krystle Henry doubled down the left field line, then scored on a single by Lisa Busciacco.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the first when senior Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, N.Y.) singled to center then scored on an RBI double by classmate Suzy de Bary (Roxbury, Conn.), tying the score at one.
In the second, the teams traded runs once again. The Rams scored two in the top of the inning on a homer to right field by Laura Klaiber and an RBI single by Henry. UConn followed with two runs of its own in the bottom half as sophomore Jessica Quan (Stoctkon, Calif.) belted a two-run homerun.
With four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth, Fordham managed to pull away. The Rams added another four runs in the six to seal the victory. Klaiber posted four of Fordham’s 17 hits as she went 4-for-4 at the plate with two homers, four RBI and two runs scored. Schettini registered two of Connecticut’s four hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior Jessica Gurney (Williamstown, Mass.) started for the Huskies and took the loss (5-4). She pitched four innings and allowed nine runs on 13 hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Junior Michelle Caouette (Wyantskill, N.Y.) relieved her and threw for two innings and allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Sara Kinney earned the win (7-4) for the Rams, allowing three runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in six innings of work.
UConn returns to action on Thursday, March 24, when the team will play in its home opener, a doubleheader against Central Connecticut beginning at 2:00 p.m.
