Women's Tennis Falls to Army and Air Force

WEST POINT, N.Y. (February 20, 2005) - Sophomore Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) and senior Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) each won their second singles match of the weekend, but the University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell to both Army, 5-2, and Air Force, 4-3, on Sunday at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. The Huskies are now 0-4 this spring.
Burek, competing at No. 4, defeated Jennifer Segar of Army, 8-6. Senior Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) won the other UConn point with a 9-8 victory over Megan Noble at No. 3.
LoRusso, in the No. 2 spot, was narrowly defeated by Amy Morgenstern, 7-6, 6-4. UConn dropped all three doubles matches, with Burek and LoRusso battling Noble and Segar at No. 2, but losing 9-7.
In the afternoon matchup, the Huskies were edged by Air Force, with the two teams splitting the singles matches and Air Force taking the victory with the doubles point. No. 2 LoRusso defeated Karisssa Walker, 6-3, 6-4, while Schumsky at No. 3 topped Katie Tomkie, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) rallied to take down Liza Vaccaro, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot.
The UConn duo of Burek and LoRusso were victorious in their second doubles match on the day, edging Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson, 9-8 (4).
Connecticut's women's and men's tennis teams will next travel to Phoenix, Ariz., during spring break to get in some warm weather action while facing a number of teams.
