DETROIT, Mich. (November 4, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell to Wayne State, 1-0, on Friday evening. It is the third shutout loss for the Huskies on the season and they are now 2-4-0 overall on the season. With the win, Wayne State is now 2-5-2 overall.
Both teams were unable to connect to score in the first period, as Wayne State out-shot UConn, 13 to 6. Through the first two stanzas, the Huskies were out-shot, 22 to 14, by the Warriors while killing the five power play opportunities that Wayne State had.
A penalty of too many players on the ice by the Huskies 12:57 into the third period proved to be enough for Wayne State, as Melissa Boal connected to score the only goal of the game on the power play opportunity. She was assisted by Sam Poyton and Lindsay DiPietro on the play.
For the game, senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 26 saves while giving up the lone goal and taking the loss. Valery Turcotte had the win for Wayne State, stopping all 23 of the Huskies shots in the game. UConn was 0-for-4 on the power play while taking seven shots and Wayne State was 1-for-6 with 12 shots. The Warriors out-shot the Huskies, 27 to 23, for the game.
UConn will look to split the series on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 4:00 p.m. at the City Sports Arena.
