ERIE, Pa. (October 29, 2005) - A two-goal effort by junior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) was not enough to stop Mercyhurst in the University of Connecticut's men's hockey 5-3 loss on Saturday night. The Huskies' record drops to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Atlantic Hockey conference while the Lakers improve to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the AHA.
The Lakers began their scoring with two goals in the first period on sophomore goalkeeper Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.). Scott Champagne, with assists from Kirk Medernach and Jamie Hunt, scored Mercyhurst's first goal at the 8:52 mark of the first stanza. Brett Robinson increased the Lakers' lead to 2-0 with a goal a little over 10 minutes later with an assist from Champagne.
The second stanza was no different as the Huskies were held scoreless. Mercyhurst scored two more goals to increase the lead to 4-0. Scott Reynolds tallied a goal at the 7:54 mark of the second period. Hunt and Champagne assisted on the play. Hunt recorded the fourth goal of the game with help from Champagne and Reynolds just under five minutes later.
Koidahl began his attempts on rallying the Huskies in the third period. At the 4:46 mark of the stanza, Koidahl scored his first goal assists from senior captain Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and senior Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ont.).
Ben Cottreau muted the Connecticut rally with the Lakers' fifth goal at the 7:21 mark before Koidahl attacked again, increasing the Huskies' goal scoring to two goals. Junior captain Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) assisted on the power play.
With less than a minute remaining in the game, Uber scored the Huskies' final goal of the game to bring the final score to 5-3.
The Huskies play their first home game of the season on Nov. 4 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs Campus at 7:05 p.m.
