No. 12 UConn Field Hockey Edges Syracuse 3-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 23, 2005) - Three different players scored goals as the No. 12 University of Connecticut field hockey team withstood a rally to edge Syracuse 3-2 in the team’s final road game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon.
The win marks the Huskies’ fourth straight and improves their overall record to 13-4 and 3-1 in BIG EAST games. UConn will clinch at least a share of the BIG EAST Conference regular season title with a win in its final home game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 vs. Providence.
Meagan Hoffman (West Granby, Conn.), Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) and Rebecca Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J.) each scored in the win for UConn.
Hoffmann scored the game’s only goal in the first half at 20:53 before Galuski followed with her team-leading 12th tally of the season to give UConn a 2-0 advantage just 1:55 into the second half.
Syracuse (9-8, 3-2 BIG EAST) responded with back-to-back goals within a span of 1:40 from Michelle Sola to knot the contest at 2-2.
Helwig answered quickly for the Huskies as she ripped her 10th score of the season less than 34 seconds later to give UConn the 3-2 win.
For the game UConn out-shot the Orange 14-5 and attempted nine penalty corners to Syracuse’s two.
The Huskies close out the regular season this week with a pair of home games. UConn will host Boston College in a non-conference match up on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) before facing Providence in a BIG EAST tilt on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. (ET). The game vs. the Friars will also feature the Hartford Courant CareerBuilder.com Senior Salute.
