MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Oct. 18) - Sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) was named U.S. College Hockey Online Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the website on Tuesday. It was the second such honor of her career and comes on the heels of her being named Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Monday.
Hawkins picked up her third career hat trick in the first period of play to pace the Huskies to a 3-1 victory over Providence on Saturday to earn the honor. The USCHO.com Rookie of the Year in 2004-05 picked up her first goal of the season three minutes and 52 seconds into the first period, unassisted, and then increased the UConn lead to two just 11 seconds later. Her third and final goal came at the 19:15 mark in the period. At the time, the Friars were ranked No. 9 in the national polls. With the UConn victory, the Huskies entered both polls this week, earning a No. 10 ranking in both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
Senior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) was the runner-up for USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week honors after a 37 save performance against Providence on Saturday. Twenty-six of those saves came in the final two periods of play, as Shain held the Friars to just one goal in the game. On Monday, Shain received her second-consecutive Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor and the fifth of her career. She currently holds a 2.25 goals against average for her career and a .923 save percentage in 60 games played.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 22, when they travel to Maine to take on the Black Bears. The puck will drop at noon.
