WAKEFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 17) - Senior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) earned Co-Player of the Week honors as announced by the Hockey East office on Monday.
In earning her second-consecutive Defensive Player of the Week honor, Shain had 37 saves against three-time Hockey East champion Providence in UConn’s 3-1 victory in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday. Twenty-six of those saves came in the final two periods of play, as Shain held the Friars to just one goal in the game.
Hawkins, the 2004-05 ITECH Rookie of the Year, continued her offensive onslaught on Saturday, picking up her third career hat trick in the first period of play to pace the Huskies to victory. Hawkins picked up her first goal of the season three minutes and 52 seconds into the first period, unassisted, and then increased the UConn lead to two just 11 seconds later. Her third and final goal came at the 19:15 mark in the period.
Also on Monday, the Huskies entered the national rankings for the first time this season, receiving 17 points for a No. 10 ranking in the USCHO.com National Poll. UConn is the second Hockey East team in the rankings, as New Hampshire is ranked fifth. St. Lawrence received 14 first place votes en route to the No. 1 ranking. UConn wrapped up the 2004-05 season ranked No. 10 in the same poll.
The Huskies are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 22, when they travel to Maine to take on the Black Bears. The puck will drop at noon.
