Women's Tennis Competes at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2005) – Ashley Petruzzi won the Singles "D" flight championship to highlight the University of Connecticut women's tennis team's participation in the Bucknell Invitational, contested from Oct. 14-16.
Petruzzi's tough road to the title included a 7-5, 7-5 win over Tiffany Card of Bucknell, a 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 victory over Anna Martorell of St. Bonaventure, a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over Kate Houghton of Army and, finally a 6-3, 1-6, 10-5 win over Gabna Gasiunaite of St. John's in the final. Meanwhile in the "D" draw, Alison Koch had a nice run through the consolation round, advancing to the final before falling, 8-4, to Mary Ford of Army.
At the Singles "A" level, Jackie Shapiro took one back in the back draw, both otherwise she and Christine Burek came up empty for the Huskies. Both Jess Porter and BreAnn Cheung won a round of consolation play at the "B" tier for UConn with Porter topping Lindsey Smith of Colgate, 8-2 and Cheung topping Smith's Red Raider teammate Erin Fenn, 8-4. In the "C" draw, Liz Dibbs advanced to the fifth-place match after her victories against Ashley Globerman of Bucknell and Limsiaco of Army.
Dibbs and Shapiro ran the table in the consolation side of the Doubles "A draw, topping Ebbert and Wang of Cornell, 8-6, Mills and Gaskin of Bucknell, 8-4, and Altinay and Kushnirovich of Binghamton, 8-4. Burek and Cheung had their run through the back draw interrupted by an 8-4 loss to Altinay and Kushnirovich. In "B" doubles action, Porter and Koch reached the semifinals before running into Scarangella and Balasundar of Binghamton where the Bearcat team posted a 8-6 win.
